Cox Flexion-Distraction

A gentle, table-assisted technique for the spine.

Cox Flexion-Distraction

What is it?

Cox flexion-distraction is a gentle, table-assisted chiropractic technique. You lie face-down on a specialized table that moves in a controlled, rhythmic way while the doctor guides the motion of specific spinal segments.

The gentle flexion and traction are designed to move the spine without a quick thrust, and are thought to reduce pressure within the disc and the joints and to support healthy movement and nutrition of spinal tissues.

Why might it be recommended?

Often considered for certain low-back and disc-related presentations, sciatic-type leg symptoms, lumbar stiffness, and for people who prefer — or need — a gentler alternative to traditional adjustments. It can also be adapted for the neck.

What does treatment feel like?

A rhythmic, gentle stretching sensation through the low back; typically comfortable and often relaxing. The doctor adjusts the motion continuously based on your response.

Its role in the Psalm 30:2 approach

A specific spinal tool chosen when assessment suggests it may help. Calming an irritated spinal segment reduces the protective signals the nervous system sends to surrounding muscles — and gives us room to restore motion in the hips, pelvis and mid-back that often load the low back in the first place.

Who might be appropriate for it?

Adults whose assessment indicates it may be appropriate, including people with disc-related or radiating symptoms, older adults, and those who want a low-force approach. It can often be modified during pregnancy.

What should you expect?

Positioning on the specialized table, followed by short sets of gentle, guided motion. We monitor and reassess symptoms throughout, and pair treatment with simple positions and movements you can use at home.

Reasonable limitations & considerations

Appropriateness is determined individually after assessment. It isn't suitable for everyone, and certain conditions may require referral or a modified approach. Some disc-related problems take time and consistent care to settle.

How it integrates with other care

Combined with soft-tissue care and progressive loading. Flexion-distraction calms and mobilizes the spine; core timing, hip work and rehab rebuild the support that protects it.
